Explore spacing, contrast and visual rhythm to create patterns that feel considered and easy to follow.
What makes a pattern feel balanced?
Balance is the way visual elements work together across a composition. It does not require perfect symmetry. A design can feel balanced through thoughtful spacing, repetition and contrast.
Vary dense and open areas
If every part of your drawing contains tiny details, the design may feel visually busy. Leave some areas more open to give the eye a place to rest.
Repeat with small variations
Repeating a motif creates continuity. Changing its size or direction in selected places introduces interest while keeping the overall design connected.
Consider the edges
Look at the border of your drawing. A simple frame can give the composition structure, while an open edge can make it feel lighter. Choose the approach that supports your design.
Review from a distance
Take a moment to look at the entire page rather than focusing on individual marks. If one area dominates unexpectedly, simplify it or add a little detail elsewhere.
