Start with approachable shapes and repeating marks that help you build confidence with pattern drawing.
Begin with simple marks
Beautiful repeating patterns can grow from very basic shapes. You do not need to plan a complicated design before you begin. Start with one mark and explore how it looks when repeated.
Seven beginner-friendly ideas
- Dots: Arrange small dots in rows, circles or loose clusters.
- Parallel lines: Vary their spacing to create a calm rhythm.
- Waves: Repeat gentle curves across the page.
- Petals: Place curved loops around a central point.
- Scallops: Join rounded arches to make a border.
- Spirals: Draw loose spirals inside circles or open spaces.
- Leaf shapes: Repeat simple pointed ovals along a curved stem.
Turn marks into a design
Choose two or three of these elements and combine them inside a square, circle or free-form outline. Leave some breathing room between the sections so the finished piece does not feel crowded.
Keep practising
Repeat one small pattern several times. Notice how changes in scale, spacing and direction create different results. Your own style will develop with practice.
